4차례 올스타에 선정된 외야수 지안카를로 스탠튼의 행선지가 결국 뉴욕 양키스로 결정됐다. 마이애미 말린스는 이제 팀을 바닥에서부터 뒤엎는 전면 리빌딩에 돌입한다.

마이애미는 팀 역사상 가장 인기 많고 성적도 뛰어났던 스탠튼을 떠나보내는 비싼 대가를 치르면서 리빌딩에 착수한다. 지난 시즌 내셔널 리그 MVP였던 스탠튼은 트레이드 거부권을 풀고 양키스행 이적에 동의했다.

마이애미는 스탠튼을 보내는 대가로 2루수 스탈린 카스트로와 우완 투수 유망주, 호르헤 구즈먼(양키스 유망주 9위), 내야 유망주 호세 디버스를 데려온다고 알려졌다. 메디컬 테스트가 마무리되면 트레이드는 최종 성사될 전망이다.

마이애미는 윈터 미팅을 앞두고 주축 선수 2명을 떠나보내게 됐다. 올스타에 2번 선정된 2루수 디 고든은 지난 12월 8일(이하 한국시간) 유망주 3명(우완 투수 닉 네이더트, 로버트 더거, 내야수 크리스토퍼 토레스)을 대가로 시애틀 매리너스로 트레이드됐다.

시애틀은 앞으로 3년 동안 디 고든이 받게 될 연봉 3,800만 달러를 부담한다. 양키스는 스탠튼에게 남아 있는 10년 2억 9,500만 달러의 연봉 중 2억 6,500만 달러를 부담한다고 알려졌다.

아직 마이애미와 양키스 모두 스탠튼의 트레이드를 공식 확정하지는 않은 상태다.

8일 고든이 시애틀로 이적한 뒤 마이애미 마이클 힐 사장은 향후 팀 운영 계획에 대해 간단히 언급한 바 있다.

힐 사장은 “우리는 현재 팀의 위치를 알고 있습니다. 우리는 더 나아질 필요가 있습니다. 팀의 선수층을 강화해야 합니다. 우리가 지속적으로 성적을 낼 수 있는 팀이 됐다고 느낄 수 있도록 팀을 구성할 기회를 잡아야 합니다”하고 말했다.

마이애미는 지난 8년 연속으로 루징 시즌을 견뎌왔다. 2017시즌에도 77승 85패를 기록하면서 지구 1위 워싱턴에 20경기 차로 뒤졌다. 와일드 카드 2위 팀과의 승차도 10경기였다.

마이애미의 선수연봉총액은 오프 시즌 시작 당시 1억 1,500만 달러로 팀 역대 최고 수치를 기록했다. 마이애미는 뛰어난 주축 선수들을 보유하고 있었지만 투수진과 선수층의 두께에 약점을 안고 있었다. 새롭게 출범한 수뇌부는 팀 운영의 새로운 방향을 제시하면서 선수연봉총액을 1억 달러 이하로 줄인다는 계획이다.

마이애미는 스탠튼과 고든을 트레이드하면서 윈터 미팅 전에 이미 가장 어려운 숙제를 해결했는지도 모른다.

하지만 추가 트레이드가 이루어질 수도 있다. 2017시즌 올스타에 선정된 좌익수 마르셀 오주나는 트레이드 가능성이 가장 높은 선수이다.

또 다른 주축 선수인 중견수 크리스티안 옐리치와 포수 J.T. 리얼무토가 팀을 떠날 가능성은 크지 않다. 마이애미는 첫 연봉 조정에 들어가는 댄 스트레일리의 트레이드 제안도 들어볼 것이다. 하지만 만족스러운 제안이 들어올 경우에만 스트레일리의 이적이 성사될 것이다.

MLB Trade Rumors에 따르면 2년 후에 FA 자격을 취득하는 오주나의 내년 시즌 예상 연봉은 1,100만 달러이다.

세인트루이스 카디널스는 오주나 영입을 타진할 유력 후보다. 27살인 오주나는 2017시즌 타율 .312, 홈런 37개 타점 124개를 기록했다. 마이애미는 지난 몇 주간 세인트루이스와 스탠튼 트레이드 논의를 이어가기도 했다. 오주나는 홈런 생산 능력이 뛰어난 타자로 세인트루이스의 요구에도 부합한다.

세인트루이스는 스탠튼 영입에 거의 근접했지만 스탠튼이 트레이드 거부권을 행사하면서 영입이 무산되고 말았다.

마이애미는 뉴욕 양키스와 마이너리그 선수들의 트레이드에 합의하기도 했다. 마이애미는 좌완 칼렙 스미스와 1루수 게럿 쿠퍼를 받는 대신 우완 마이클 킹과 국제 FA 계약 보너스 금액 25만 달러를 내줬다.

As the finishing touches are being made on a trade that will send four-time All-Star outfielder Giancarlo Stanton to the Yankees, the Marlins are now positioned to go full steam into their plan to build their organization from the bottom up.

The restructuring comes at a hefty price, as Miami parts with one of the most popular and productive players in franchise history. Stanton, the reigning National League Most Valuable Player Award winner, is reportedly willing to waive his no-trade clause to join New York.

The Marlins reportedly will receive second baseman Starlin Castro and Minor League right-hander Jorge Guzman, ranked by MLBPipeline.com as New York's No. 9 prospect, and infielder Jose Devers in return for the slugger. The deal is believed to be pending completion of medicals.

Once completed, Stanton will be the second major player traded by the Marlins leading into the Winter Meetings, set for Sunday at Lake Buena Vista, Fla. Two-time All-Star second baseman Dee Gordon was dealt to the Mariners on Thursday for three prospects -- right-handers Nick Neidert and Robert Dugger and infielder Christopher Torres.

Seattle is picking up the remaining $38 million owed to Gordon over the next three seasons, while MLB.com reports the Yankees could be on the hook for $265 million of the $295 million Stanton is due for the next 10 years. If, Stanton does not opt out of his deal after the 2020 season, the Marlins would send the Yankees $30 million, a source told MLB.com's Jon Paul Morosi and first reported by MLB Network Insider Joel Sherman.

Neither the Marlins nor Yankees have confirmed the Stanton trade is final.

After Gordon was traded on Thursday, Marlins president of baseball operations Michael Hill touched on the club's offseason objective.

"We know where we're at, we need to get better," Hill said. "We need to add depth. We need to do things to give us an opportunity to build an organization that we feel can win consistently."

The Marlins have endured eight straight losing seasons, finishing 77-85 and 20 games behind the Nationals in the National League East in 2017, and 10 games off the pace for the second Wild Card spot.

Miami opened this past season with a payroll of $115 million, the highest in franchise history. Despite having a strong core of position players, the Marlins lacked pitching and organizational depth, prompting new ownership to move the team in another direction -- with payroll targeted for below $100 million.

By trading Stanton and Gordon, the Marlins will have already done plenty of their heavy lifting before the Winter Meetings.

Still, more moves could follow -- and All-Star left fielder Marcell Ozuna moves to the top of the list.

The two players least likely to be dealt are center fielder Christian Yelich and catcher J.T. Realmuto. Miami might listen to offers for right-hander Dan Straily, who is in arbitration -- but it would have to be an offer that overwhelmed the club to be completed.

Arbitration-eligible for two more seasons, Ozuna's salary projection, according to MLB Trade Rumors, is just under $11 million.

The Cardinals offer a potential match for the 27-year-old, who batted .312 with 37 home runs and 124 RBIs in 2017. Miami just spent weeks in discussions with St. Louis regarding Stanton, and Ozuna would also fit its need for a power-hitting outfielder.

St. Louis had the framework of a deal in place with Miami for Stanton, but he declined to waive his no-trade clause.

In talks regarding Stanton, the Marlins had interest in Cardinals right-handers Jack Flaherty, Dakota Hudson and Sandy Alcantara, ranked third, eighth and ninth, respectively, on St. Louis' Top 30 prospects list, according to MLBPipeline.com. Any of them could be part of a possible package for Ozuna.

The Marlins also completed a Minor League trade with the Yankees this offseason, acquiring left-hander Caleb Smith and first baseman Garrett Cooper for right-hander Michael King and $250,000 of international bonus pool money.
